Every Local LLM Setup Priced and Ranked: PC vs Mac Mini vs Mini Workstations

I have written quite a few articles on this page around what setups you should build for local LLM. I get many questions too, on different other things and few other hardware which I am not even aware of.I Priced Out Every Local LLM Setup in 2026 So You Don’t Have To

In the economy where not having AI in your project or work seems like a 19th century technology, And where buying subscriptions for Claude, GPT, Gemini costs you a ton of money. I wanted to explore a full local setup, which kind of works on-par/close with this subscription.

I know, I know, we are not there yet of achieving the results close to Claude or GPT from a local model. But we don’t actually need that much intelligence and capabilities right? 

So after gaining a good amount of information from the local setup guides, like Mac mini series, Nvidia DGX mini pc, Ryzen Strix Halo mini pc. I want to list out the best possible setup (In my opinion ofcourse), For a small developer with marginal cost. Feel free to add ur suggestions or alternatives in the comments. I will tag the other articles in the end of this so u can check them too.

Lets address the elephant in the room First

Man this Ramappocolypse is bombing my wallet in the first place. I am not even sure when this could all end, and seeing the pricing go up and up when I had chance 1–2 years ago to buy my hardware and the hesitation left the item in cart, makes me feel miserable.

And I seriously don’t think this will solve any time soon, and not even sure if this is the worse situation we are in, or the worse is yet to come, or it starting to get loosen up. 

So Just remember, all the pricing could have been a min of 15–20% lower on the overall cost if this was a year ago, and Even 30–40% specifically for memory and storage costs.

What comes to my mind First?

See, I am a pc guy, I mean a actual pc guy, not the mini pc. So my first thought will definitely will goto a full fledged PC, which also works best for other works( Yea yeah I game a lot so I need a Full pc). And I am not rich af to get a 5090 or a 4090 in my setup, and also i don’t think most of the readers wont be this rich to afford them.

Then let’s dicuss the path what I had to choose from. My mindset was to get as much as Vram possible. Because if your buying a GPU and not a integrated CPU, VRAM is everything. Whether its gaming or llm running the amount of memory defines everything. 

4Gb was considered okish around 2–3 years ago, Then it become medivial, then 8gb, which lasted 1 year (but we still love you 1080ti), and now it feels like it has become a norm of having 16GB min for gaming or llms. So let’s stick with 16GB VRAM.

I am not going on a high end gpus like 5080 but budget ones like 5060ti, and even a 9060xt 16gb( which I have). the nvidia one comes around 500$ and AMD comes around 300–350$ based on the manufracturer. Both of them perform same just 1–3% differences in speeds etc. So I leave that choice to you, if u are a Nvidia fan boy choose Nvidia, if u want the best value or best value per dollar choose team reds, 9060xt. 

You can also spend a couple dollars more like 100–120$ and get the 9070xt which increases the performance by 20–30%.

What about other specifications?

I mean same story for memory too, 16gb was a basic thing but 32GB is must now. So a 32Gb will cost you around 300–400$ thanks to OpenAi and Claude, for the price hikes. 

Then there are some others things like which CPU or how much storage. I would suggest getting some 1TB or 512GB ssd, make sure to have ur windows running on SSD, and preferebly the ollama or other models too on ssd. For CPU I have covered a dedicated article for it, please check that out.

How much does this sum up to: So 400$ GPU, 350$ Ram ;( ,250$ on CPU, 200$ on storage, 300$ on other pc parts and it end ups to (drum rolll) 1500$

Yes 1500$ is the price i think you can build a midrange PC, which can also be future proof around 3–5 years. And not just for Local llm for other tasks too like gaming, editing, photoshoping etc.

Again Dont forget to thank OpenAI, Samsung, Micron on inflating the pricing, which i think would have costed 1000$.

Do You just need to run Local LLMs and not anything else, Should you consider Apple then?

Then you have come to the right place to enter the apple fan boy cult, ah my bad my bad, The apply ecosystem.

See, I throw stones at apple here and there. But Iam not gonna lie, Apple has one of the best performing chip currently, Which is proven for more than 2–3 years, Also the best ecosystem you could probably get. Keep in mind this all comes at a cost.

I think a Mac Mini m4 or M4 Pro with a minimum of 24GB memory is the sweet spot for local LLM, with the base version chip M4 costing around 1300–1500$ with 1TB of storage. The 48GB memory is also very good choice with M4 Pro chip. The best of the best currently for the throughput. It will cost around 2000–2500$ based on the other modifications which you do.

You will be using all the Apple applications and apple ecosystem, and using Unified meory as llm memory. Keep in mind that this setups are locked and it cannot be upgraded in future. So if u buy a 24GB memory thinking of upgrading in future it cannot be upgraded, as the memory chips come attached to the motherboard. So buy something future proof.

You can also do other things like editing and photo-shoping on this device using apple software(which also costs more). But the M4 chip is very efficient at everything. Even the thermals are very good, not as much as noise compared to PC, i mean litral silent device. Doesnt occupy much space. And also looks classy and clean, I think the design of this mac mini is just perfect the shape size all perfect.

Do we need to see The emerging players?

The Pc building community is expanding very fast, espacially the mini-pc segment which the Mac mini is currently the king of it. Nvidia and AMD also wanted to get the share. Both of them entered and launched their own products NVIDIA DGX and Ryzen Strix HALO.

Trust me, I dont think this are for the consumers or masses, alteast seeing from the prices. The team red’s Ryzen mini pc is at least manageable around 2000–2500$, But the team blue DGX spark mini pc comes with a heavy price tag of around 3000$+

I really don’t think this is the prices anyone could afford to build a PC, Ah my bad Mini pc. It’s not like they are priced heavily but we need to understand why.

The main concept between this 2 mini pc, and also mac mini is they are all unified memory architecture. They use memory as a VRAM alternative. The more memory you have the more parameter model you can run. so they come with a massive memories like 64GB or 128GB for which you can run even a 200B+ param model, which is really insane.

But the question is same, Do you need that much performance for your work? If yes, Do you have the money to buy those? yes go for it, they are the best. 

What if you are rich but confused?

If you have the money to afford but cannot choose from, I would suggest question yourself 2 questions. 

How big of a model are you trying to run, Is it like more than 200B or on a smaller end like 50B-100B params. Then are you willing to take the work of setting up things, configuring networks, models, fine tuning things etc.

So, if you want to run 50–100B model and dont want to end up reading logs and erros just go for the Mac mini, prefferebly the Pro version with 48GB of memory. Or else go for NVidia or Ryzen, based on the amount you have, whereAMD being the cheaper version.

And thats just for mini pc, running a bigger models on PC with GPU is still a heavy tasks, and would require more than one GPU like 5090, or else getting a AI specific GPU like 9000 series etc. But thats the costiler aspect, we are here for a overall budget build.

Some final Thoughts

While writing things article I feel like, why would anyone want to build a 1000–2000$ PC just to skip 20$ or 50$ api subscription bills. But that also means ur not giving ur personal information to this AI gaints. Your learning new things by seting up models, connecting them, making pipelines etc, which in itself is a great valuable experience. 

So First question, full feldged or Model Specific, Then its PC or Mini PC. Then comes the amount of usage, 50–100B or 200B+ then choices are Mac Mini or team Blue/Red.
